Bangladesh Power Sector Update: 33 kV Grid Expansion Creates New Demand for Switchgear

The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and Rural Electrification Board (REB) have accelerated their 33 kV feeder expansion programme, with over 800 new distribution substations planned for commissioning by 2026 across Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions.

Each 33/11 kV or 33/0.4 kV substation package typically includes:

• 33 kV Ring Main Units (RMUs) or HT panels
• LT distribution boards
• Lightning protection and earthing systems

Supply Chain Constraints

The surge in demand has created lead time pressure on 33 kV RMUs and HT circuit breakers. Procurement teams should plan 12–16 week lead times for imported switchgear from established suppliers. Locally manufactured transformers up to 2500 kVA are generally available within 6–8 weeks.
